Travel Tips for Booking in Telavi
- Self‑driving? Prioritize parking. Old-town lanes are narrow and hilly. If you’re arriving by car, pick a stay with private on‑site parking (I’ve flagged them above) or plan to leave the car near Nadikvari and walk.
- Harvest (Rtveli) is peak season. Late September–early October brings grape picking and festivals — magical but busy. Book 4–6 weeks ahead for boutique hotels and winery stays.
- Tsinandali isn’t Telavi… but it’s close. If you’re splurging on a night at Tsinandali Estate, do it — then spend the other night(s) in Telavi proper for easier dining and market access.
- Winery logistics. Many tasting rooms require advance bookings for full tours. If you’re short on time, pick a hotel with an on‑site cellar and add one or two nearby estates.
- No car? Totally fine. Local taxis and Bolt are inexpensive for short hops to wineries and back. Ask your host to help arrange a ride — they all have a go‑to driver.
- Cash still helps. Most hotels take cards; several family guesthouses are still cash‑preferred for extras (dinners, tastings). Carry some GEL.

1 Day is good enough if you are passing through and doing a short winery tour. However 2 days are ideal to cover the essentials and truely absorb the beauty and charm of this area.
Two nights: One full day for the old town, markets, and nearby monasteries; one day for Kakheti wineries or a pool day.
Three nights: Ideal during Rtveli (autumn grape harvest) or if working between tastings—adds breathing room without rushing.
Q2. Is Telavi better than Sighnaghi for a Kakheti base?
They’re different: Telavi is larger, more local, and closer to major wineries and monasteries; Sighnaghi is smaller, very scenic, and perfect for slow mornings with views.

A car isn’t mandatory, but it gives you the most flexibility to enjoy both town and rural Kakheti.
Having a car (or private driver) is especially handy for wandering between spread-out wineries, monasteries, and scenic stops—Georgia’s public transport doesn’t serve those well.
Without a car, you can still make it work:
Telavi’s centre is walkable and connected to nearby sites by marshrutka (minibus) or shared taxis.
Many guesthouses can book trustworthy private drivers or day tours at reasonable rates (about 70–100 GEL per person for a full-day round trip).
Q4. When is the best time to visit Telavi?
The best time to visit Telavi is late spring to early autumn, especially May and September – October, when days are warm (20–25 °C), vineyards are in bloom or harvest, and crowds are smaller.
May & September–October: Comfortable weather, wine harvest (Rtveli), festivals like Telavino.
June–August: Hot, sunny, perfect for pool days and long winery visits, but busier.
Winter: Georgia can be quiet and cold, with limited seasonal activities. Nonetheless, I visited in early November and had no issues finding and booking tours and activities. The only downside I had was closure of the hiking regions, due to snowfall.
